Press the top and back. A well pressed top is the key to a smooth, well finished project.
Are you sending me a fat back? PRESS it! Fat backs are notorious for having a few extra folds in them. Not only do these folds need to be pressed out, but your backing might not be straight and you might have less fabric than you thought.
Measure the backing (and batting if provided). The backing and batting both need to be a total of 8” larger than the top.
For example, if the top is 50×50, the backing & batting need to measure 58×58.
Square your backing. Make sure all four sides have straight edges. Selvages can restrict movement, consider removing them if your backing is pieced.
Frame the top with a 1/4” seam for any modern quilt or a quilt without a border. This 1/4″ seam will prevent seams from pulling during all the activities required to longarm quilt a top.
Trim loose top threads. Thread tails can get caught in my hopping foot or caught in the stitches. Thread-free seems impossible but make it your goal for the front of your quilt top before sending it my way.
Consider thread choices (for top and back) when you select your backing. It’s best not to use a dark and light thread combination.
Remember, quilts are quilted in the condition received. Charges will be applied if additional preparation (like pressing) is required to the top or back.
